speech & language pathology
Speech therapy and language pathology services are available for patients experiencing any interruption in the communication process. As communication skills are necessary for physical and mental health, along with normal growth and development, diagnosis and treatment of these disorders is important to patients of all ages.
Pediatric speech language professionals are a part of the department and
also administer care through Early Intervention Services. Pediatric
treatments involve assessment and intervention for children from birth
to adolescence who experience communication difficulties. It is
important to note that even normal developing children can experience
communication deficits.
Services also are provided for those with chronic illnesses,
developmental delays or neurological dysfunction. Disorders include but
are not limited to autism, cerebral palsy, Down's Syndrome, seizure
disorders and cleft pallet. Physical deficits such as hearing
impairment, vocal nodules, and gastro-esophagial reflex disorders may
also prompt a referral to OLBH’s Speech Therapy and Language Pathology
Department.
The adult speech therapy and language pathology program deals with
restoring speech and communication skills to people who have undergone a
life-altering episode, such as stroke, traumatic brain injury,
neurological disease or dysfunction or laryngectomy.
