The Power of Prayer and Healing

"If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer."
NIV - Matthew 21:22

Michael Goodwin, M.D.
OLBH Orthopedic Surgeon
As an orthopedic surgeon, Michael Goodwin, M.D., sees the miracle of physical healing every day in his work. "As a Christian, I know that the ultimate service of all healing comes from the "Great Physician," our Heavenly Father," Dr. Goodwin said.

Dr. Goodwin adds, "There have been numerous studies showing that people who believe in the power of prayer and who put their faith in God in addition to their physician, recover much quicker."

The power of prayer and healing is a concept Dr. Goodwin incorporated into his medical practice in 2000. This doesn't mean he suggests leaving conventional medicine and doctors behind. "The reaction I've received when offering prayer along with conventional medical techniques to my patients has ben unbelievably positive," Dr. Goodwin said.

"Given that a Gallup survey showed 94 percent of Americans believe in God, it is not surprising that, according to Time magazine, USA Today and CBS studies, 60 percent of patients believe their physicians should address spiritual issues as part of medical care." The Gallup Poll also revealed that 40 percent of patients want their doctors to actively discuss religious issues with them, and nearly 50 percent want their physicians to pray not just for them but with them.

"Traditionally in orthopedics, we see elderly patients who have broken bones due to osteoporosis," Dr. Goodwin said. "If these patients go to church, have a strong faith or a support group, inevitably, recovery times are quicker and these people have less depression. It is also important to remember that receiving treatment from a caring nurse, physician or therapist, who demonstrates personal interest in patients, can make all the difference in recovery times and outcomes."

Dr. Goodwin explains that a number of people he sees in his physician office may have, in addition to physical problems, underlying emotional issues as well. "Very few patients I've offered to pray with have declined," Dr. Goodwin added. "The majority are extremely willing and are thrilled that a physician would humble himself and take the time to pray with them."

Dr. Goodwin says he realizes that not all wish to receive prayer when faced with surgery. "I can only hope that the Holy Spirit leads me to discern which patients want or need prayer in their life."
