Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital urologists are leading the way in groundbreaking kidney removal surgery for patients with early stage kidney (renal) cancer or serious kidney disease. The technique, which has numerous benefits, is known as laparoscopic nephrectomy (removal of the kidney).
"Historically, patients with early stage renal cancer or serious kidney disease had their kidney removed through a complex surgical procedure," Francis Ogbolu, D.O., OLBH urologist, explained. "The complexity of the procedure kept some elderly patients and patients with other medical complications from having surgery. Physicians now have adopted an advanced type of surgery known as laparoscopic surgery."
Laparoscopic nephrectomy (removal of the kidney) is a form of surgery that utilizes instruments, along with hand assistance, to view and remove the kidney. "The kidney and surrounding tissue is viewed with a scope," Dr. Ogbolu said. "The scope and surgical instruments are maneuvered through several small incisions in the stomach. The small incisions required for the surgery allow for faster recovery times, shorter hospital stays and less pain after surgery."
According to Dr. Ogbolu, patients also return to work and/or normal activities much sooner than with the open-type surgery. "Every aspect of the patient's recovery is favorably influenced by the laparoscopic approach," Dr. Ogbolu concluded.
