OLBH Same Day Surgery Center
Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital recently expanded the Same Day Surgery Center to open a new operating room suite. The newly added operating room, the fifth at the OLBH Same Day Surgery Center, is dedicated solely to the treatment of urological conditions. The dedicated urology operating room is equipped with the state-of-the-art Storz Medical Modulith SLX urological workstation. The workstation enables the hospital to have an outpatient surgery facility offering some of the most advanced procedures available for the treatment of urological conditions. Additionally, OLBH is the only hospital in the region with this sophisticated technology. "Over the past few years, healthcare has seen many significant advances, but few are likely to have as great an impact as the rapid growth of outpatient surgery procedures" E. W. Unnikrishnan, M.D., OLBH urologist and chief of surgery, said. " Before this equipment was incorporated, patients had to be admitted to the hospital. Now, with the Same Day Surgery Center's additional technology, patients are offered the benefit of quality and convenience while being provided access to the same excellent surgical care available inside the hospital." In addition to Dr. Unnikrishnan, the urology specialists at OLBH include William Boykin, M.D., Timothy Dixon, M.D., Stephen Edge, M.D., James Krick, D.O., Mark LaFave, MD. and Francis Ogbolu, D.O. The center's urological workstation is equipped with an electromagnetic cylindrical shock wave generator, known as a lithotripter. It is used to break kidney and urinary tract stones into tiny fragments that can pass easily out of the body through the urine. The workstation also is outfitted with an X-ray arm that lends precise view of the shock waves focused on the stones. "Not only is this advanced equipment one of the most modern lithotripters available today, but it also is a versatile medical workstation,"Dr. Unnikrishnan said. "Apart from being designed for the treatment of the entire spectrum of stones in the urinary tract, the workstation also can be used for a variety of other endourological therapies such as biopsies and stent placements." "Urological diseases are now being diagnosed and treated more quickly and less painfully with these advanced outpatient capabilities while achieving greater success rates compared to traditional open surgeries," Francis Ogbolu, D.O., OLBH urologist, said. The urological workstation at the OLBH Same Day Surgery Center has a unique design that combines unmatched shock wave effectiveness to break up kidney and urinary tract stones. It is equipped with the highest available penetration of 165mm and a wide opening of 300mm to maximize the urologists' efforts in treating kidney and urinary obstructions. "The increased treatment depth is especially valuable for the treatment of obese patients," Dr. Ogbolu added. "The wider opening also lessens the requirement for a large dosage of anesthesia during procedures." "In addition to enhanced lithotriposy, a number of other urological conditions can be treated in this operating room with cystocopy, which is equipment that allows for visualization of the bladder and urethra," Barbara Rigsby, OLBH Surgical Services nurse manager, said. According to Rigsby, a physician may recommend a cystoscopy to examine or treat any of the following conditions: incontinence, prostate enlargement or other urinary blockage, unusual growth, tumor or cancer, frequent urinary tract infections or blood in the urine. The OLBH Same Day Surgery Center is a comprehensive facility providing same day surgery procedures as well as pre- and postoperative testing and care. Staff and equipment are available for most surgical specialities including, but not limited to urology, orthopedics, endoscopy, ear, nose and throat, general surgery, gynecology, ophthalmology and podiatry. Patients treated at the center recover in a comfortably monitored environment. Shortly after the surgical procedures, with approval from the patient's physician, individuals can return home to their family a few hours later. Ongoing training for new techniques and equipment allows OLBH to offer the most current surgery treatment options at both the hospital and at the Same Day Surgery Center.
